With surprise I discovered today that Vanessa cardui (Distelfalter) is called the Painted Lady in English:
It is a strange kind of butterfly: it travels north in the summer and then again south in fall (in Europe though most don't make it over the Alps - many die on alpine glaciers). This year supposedly there's an invasion of them, according to Austrian nature watchers.
