just another parasite

Cuscuta europaea on Urtica dioica
You've seen this one here on my blog already, several times in fact (that is, if you keep up to date). So here again one of my favourite parasites - favourite first and foremost because it couldn't possibly abuse me as its host, which is some feature not shared by quite a few other parasites.

spring for real now

The beginning of the squills flowering season now truly indicates that there's nothing which could stop spring now. Here, they were even earlier out than snowdrops (usually it's the other way round).

snow

Pulmonaria officinalis + Acer campestre (leaves) So we had first snow worth being called 'snow' here in Vienna: it lasted for a couple of hours (but only in the border districts, not in the city of Vienna where temperatures are 1-2 degrees above levels of the surrounding land, a phenomenon to be observed in greater cities all over the world). But it was hardly worth mentioning; it's raining now. So what I posted here is something from the archives, something more pleasant.

Typha angustifolia (48°09' N 16°30' E)
There's still no snow (except for already mentioned 'industrial snow' - of that there was some today, not enough though to register on this shot). And it looks like we'll have to wait yet a little bit longer - for first true snow here in the lowlands.

pollution

Zea mays - cultivated (48°07' N 16°31' E)
Ah but the aesthethics of dirt! I'm a pro-environmentalist, mind, and in my opinion we're wasting crude oil in unacceptable quantities (come to think of it, even though I try not do I'm still contributing my share there), but it's still a nice sight, isn't it?
