vacancies

Oh, nothing has happened - I was just away on holidays, a large journey this time compared to the short trips I'm used to spend my time with, as I travelled almost the whole length of Austria, almost a 1,000 kilometres - would you believe it!! Some impressions here now:

last year's bushfire

Bushfire - Populus sp., Euphorbia cyparissias, Crataegus monogyna
Those who haven't seen the place last year wouldn't notice that there has been a bushfire - if it weren't for the scorched tree trunks and burnt bushes.
Here's how the place looks now, in the spring after the fire. Much has been destroyed, but fortunately still plenty of plants survived, orchids too of course - even though not on this place.

winter memories

That's from the times when it still was winter, a few days ago.
Betula pendula
It isn't winter anymore, today we've had above 10° Celsius (plus!) again. From minus 20 to plus 10 in a very short period of time, that could be a rekord.

First Austrian Islamic Cemetery

Vienna Islamic Cemetery
It was vandalised by right-wing extremists even before it was operating, and there was considerable opposition against having a purely Islamic cemetery also by moderate political forces.

Anyway, here it is, and God sees that it is good. Possibly, probably, it makes it easier for Muslims to feel integrated and at home here in Austria, where many of them found their new homeland. So even though I am radically against separation along cultural divisions (religion obviously being one of them) I am radically in favour of the idea behind building this cemetary - which is, for me, a statement of the Islamic community that they want to adapt to Austria.

mud season

Temperatures rose to a tropical +5° Celsius, even ten when these photos were taken.Heisslände I hardly could bear my gloves when I rode along there, in this mud and dirt (of which my bicycle - and my shoes too! - picked up more than a fair share). Ice crack'd

last of winter

Bank on snow
This was before snow-melt, which is what is happening today - despite some very interchangeable weather today: snow and sleet, and rain, and hail, and sunshine for some bright hours, and wind and snow again. As if it were april.
