All's set for winter: most of the leaves that will be shed are shed, most of the herbaceous plant parts which usually wither before winter have withered, and most of the daylight which we enjoy in spring, summer and fall has been lost - to the night, which is now longer than fourteen hours long while the day barely lasts a mere nine and a half, and still falling.
Berberis vulgaris is one of the few which retains still plenty of its fascinating red leaves. Which contrast nicely with the white bark of Populus alba.
