Yesterday the first trees of the Prunus genus opened their flowers here in Vienna; these are Prunus domesticus - a domesticated plum species:
I checked with last year and was a little bit surprised to see that vegetation is even further behind than I thought: in 2008 they were in full flower already on 15th of march, and if I remember correctly even a couple of days before. So this year's vegetation lag is some three weeks (three-and-a-half really), which is plenty.
This year's wet weather in march, with very warm weather right now might allow vegetation to catch up a little bit but I guess we will stay behind at least a week, if not two; which would mean that the first orchids are to be expected rather towards the end of april than already in mid april. Well, we'll see soon, right?
