Today - well, yesterday, as I notice it's already after midnight, but this posting still counts for friday 19th of october, yes? - the refinery of Schwechat, situated only a few kilometres from my flat, did (obviously) burn huge quantities of crude oil:
Refineries and petrol producing facilities seem to do this from time to time or even permanently for reasons not quite understandable - at least not for me.
However, I'm living here already for six or seven years (don't know exactly) and never have seen so much oil being burnt: this certainly couldn't have been routine, I certainly would have noticed and recognized such a routine in the last years if it would exist.Might have had other reasons, then; anyway, the stink of it lay in the air, and I just hope this spectacle won't be repeated for some time.Although I was quite some distance away from the fire when taking this picture, the burning oil roared like thunder. Almost unbelievable, how loud fire could be.
[I did a little research and can add: usually only gas usually would be burnt if it would be too expensive to use it elsewhere which, in my opinion, is ridiculous as it would be quite easy to transport surplus gas a few kilometres to Vienna proper, and anyway yesterday's flare wasn't from gas, obviously, but had to be from oil, smoke & smell like that would have been most untypical for gas. So a mystery to me, still; I even haven't heard or read anything in the news.]
