tylopilus

Recognize this mushroom?:

Looks delicious, doesn't it? Surely a boletus, right?

Well ... no, it's no boletus, and no, it ain't delicious at all. Lots of people fall for this species called Tylopilus felleus (German Bitterling or Gallenröhrling; I don't know how you call this one in English). If you ever try to eat this one I wouldn't expect you to eat more than one spoonful.

Anyone brave enough to eat greater quantities of this mushroom - be assured that this is not very likely - might get slight bowel problems; apart from that, this one is quite harmless. Well, of course you have to keep in mind that a single Tylopilus felleus - even a little one - thrown into a mushroom dish with tasty Boletus edulis will ruin the whole dish.

Nevertheless, they look so very much - how should one describe it: mushroomy ...
