Once there were four gasometers in Simmering, eastern district in Vienna. What they did store was the so-called Stadtgas (literally city gas) which was distilled out of coal and is poisonous; it served to to fire the gas street lamps and gas ovens in many flats, too.
In 1984, as electricity and the safer natural gas replaced the Stadtgas totally, the gasometers were shut down and awaited their destiny. They already were listed as protected buildings since 1978 so they couldn't just be demolished.
Quite similarly to the London Docklands the gasometers became revitalised, although honestly I like more what the Londoners did with their Docklands than what we did to our gasometers.
Well, I overdo it a little bit, actually it's not so bad. But - we could have done better. Todays picture is not of the gasometers, but out of a building attached to the gasometers, the latter lie on the left-hand side beyond the glass:
This is one of my favourite views in the gasometer area; but there are others. One of them you already know, it's the building posted on 8th of august. Others will follow, stay tuned.
